CUSTODIAN                                                      
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  1. All instructional personnel shall be certified and licensed in accordance with state law and the regulations of the Mississippi Department of Education. Such licensure and transcripts of credits shall be on file in the office of the Superintendent of Education.
  2. In accordance with Mississippi Code S37-9-17, all personnel employed by the public school system shall be required to pass a criminal background check and a current child abuse registry check.
  3. A satisfactory employment record.
  4. Have some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment including but not limited to: carpet machines, floor scrubbers, floor burnishing machines, and vacuum cleaners.
  5. Have some knowledge of grounds related methods, materials, and equipment, including but not limited to: lawn mowers, weed eaters, edging machines, tractors, bush hog, and blowers.
  6. Ability to follow routine oral and written instructions.
  7. Ability to follow all safety precautions related to cleaning materials and equipment.
  8. Ability to get along with other workers, supervisors, and students.
  9. Must be able to safely lift and handle up to 50 pounds.
  10. Must be able to twist, bend, sit, squat, kneel, pull, and stand.
  11. Must be able to tolerate out door work and activities up to two-hour intervals.
  12. Must be able to climb, and work, safely from ladders.
  13. Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.


REPORTS TO:              Building Principal and District Custodial Supervisor
 

JOB GOAL:

 

Provide the students and employees of the Harrison County School District with a safe, attractive, comfortable,

clean and efficient place in which to learn, play, work, and develop.


Essential Functions

Such duties and responsibilities as may be assigned, including but not limited to:

1.             Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean at all times.
2.             Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
3.             Shovel, sweep, and blow, walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate.
4.             Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
5.             Sweep, mop, dust, and empty trash in classrooms daily.
6.             Clean corridors after school each day, and during the day when their condition requires it.
7.             Scrub, hose down, and disinfect toilets, floors, daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
8.             Wash all windows and doors inside and outside at least twice each year and more frequently if necessary.
9.             Keep the buildings and grounds free from rubbish.
10.          Perform such yard keeping chores as grass cutting and tree trimming as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
11.          Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
12.          Clean all chalkboards at least once a week.
13.          Make minor building repairs.
14.          Report major repairs needed promptly to the Principal and District Custodial Supervisor.
15.          Maintains on a regular schedule all grounds and housekeeping equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
16.          Report immediately to the Principal any damage to school property.
17.          Remains on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and extended work hours have been approved.
18.          Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.

19.          Keep an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisitions such needed replacements from the District Custodial Supervisor far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodians work.
20.          Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
21.          Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Principal or District Custodial Supervisor.
22.          Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste as directed by the District Custodial Supervisor.
23.          Comply with the laws and procedures for the storage and labeling of all chemicals and supplies.
24.          Conduct regular flower bed maintenance and grooming, such as weeding, planting, and fertilizing.
25.          Follow all Safety Policy and Procedures of the Harrison County School District.
26.          Any other duties within the scope of this job description as assigned by the Principal or District Custodial Supervisor.
                                 
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment


Standard building cleaning, grounds keeping, and basic maintenance supplies including but, not limited to floor scrubbers, burnishers, (electric and gas), mops, mop buckets, lawn mowers (riding and zero turn), weed eaters, wet vacuums, push brooms.

Travel Requirements


Travel to school district buildings and meetings as required. 

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards


Work in standard school building environments.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

260 days a year with the salary and work year to be established by the School Board.

EVALUATION

Performance of the Custodian will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions in the School Board Policies and Procedures.
